A small village up in the mountains of north-east Georgia is to host a series of showcases for the contemporary photographic art event.
On July 28 in Omalo, a village in the Tusheti region of Georgia, the Tbilisi Photography & Multimedia Museum will be opening a photo exhibition aimin gto attract locals and tourists alike. A slideshow of selected photographers will be displayed along with the work of Shalva Alkhanaidze, a man who went from shepherd to photographer between 1930 -1990, taking pictures of his countrymen at work and feast, religious holidays and of course the Tusheti views.
Visitors will enjoy the classic photography and also be able to listen to a public speaking within the event. This show is designed to raise awareness, appreciation and, perhaps, remind people of the beautiful remote locations in the South Caucasus, all captured skillfully by contemporary photography.
Tbilisi Photography & Multimedia Museums’ ultimate goal is to bring contemporary photography to everyone, even those beyond Tbilisi. The organizers state that they "wish to make it available to people all over Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan."
A Swiss project, dubbed the South Caucasus Photography Hub for Education and Innovation, is what will bring it all together, after Omalo, seeing it move to other villages and regions such as Pankisi Valley and the Tserovani settlement.
The Tbilisi Photography & Multimedia Museum is the first institution in Georgia entirely dedicated to contemporary image in all its forms, be it photography, new media or video. It is a non-governmental, non-profit organization and was founded in 2017 by Nestan Nijaradze and Tusi Kapanadze.
