GUEST RECOMMENDATION: HELENA BEDWELL'S FAVORITE EATERIES

Helene Bedwell, Caucasus correspondent for Bloomberg, is a graduate of the London School of Journalism. Her early career saw her working as a television reporter for several Georgian broadcasters and, after leaving the country in 1997, she also tried her hand at languages, teaching and translation with a regular dabbling in the culinary arts. She currently works as the Caucasus correspondent for Bloomberg and is the author of a new book ‘Georgian Flavors from Helena’, on sale across Georgia and soon in London. Check out her top choices for dining in Tbilisi!

BARBARESTAN

Barbarestan Restaurant has been an important inspiration for my book and cooking, offering dishes made using recipes from the 1875 cookbook of Barbare Jorjadze, which are served in a deliciously cozy, vintage atmosphere.

The family which runs the place are dedicated to their work and aim to promote genuine Georgian tastes and flavors, with a menu that is ever-changing and very colorful (meaning it’s impossible for me to pick just one dish as my favorite because I have so many!)

BLACK LION

I recommend every guest go to Black Lion, a wonderful place in concept and colorful cuisine. Chef Meriko Gubeladze is a good friend of mine and a genius, having created numerous dishes that at first glance appear a little unorthodox, but whose incredible taste guarantees they are unforgettable.

My top choice from the menu is the Green Gomi.

‘Black Lion’ is a famous painting and true Georgian masterpiece by Pirosmani. The restaurant of the same name can be easily be considered a masterpiece of equal measure.

KETO & KOTE

People go to Keto and Kote to enjoy the stunning design and gorgeous architecture. This wonderful tourist destination is also the right choice for those who want to spend a romantic evening with their loved ones tasting a variety of delicious dishes. Keto and Kote is the Georgian version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’, but with a happy ending!

Those who can’t resist the allure of wonderful pastries and enjoy super fascinating serving skills should certainly spend some time dining in Keto and Kote.

SALOBIE MTSKHETA

Sometimes you just want to go simple, not dress up and not splash out on a fancy restaurant. At such times, we go to Salobie in Mtskheta. This is a restaurant with a notorious and unchanged authentic taste and environment. Along with a wide range of dishes, lobio (beans) prepared in the traditional Georgian clay pots cannot be recreated in any other place.

Most importantly, Salobie in Mtkheta is easy on the pocket, giving tourists on a budget a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a huge assortment of marvelous Georgian dishes.

COFFEE SHOP

I’m a big coffee lover. My morning routine always starts with a cup of Turkish coffee or Espresso. Those who like to see a true dedication to the art of coffeemaking should visit the Coffee Shop on Abashidze Street in Tbilisi. This is no typical ‘take away’ coffee, and to fully understand its taste, it is important you observe the way in which the barista makes your coffee.

It is also necessary to pick out a delicious hand-made chocolate, also made at the Coffee Shop, to accompany your coffee. You will also enjoy the electric copper vintage-looking coffee machine on display there.
