BERNARD: WHERE BELLIES GET FULL & KHINKALI SELLS OUT!

REVIEW

I don’t know who Bernard is, or how he ended up in Georgia, but God bless that man and his restaurants! Perhaps there is no eponymous man behind the venture, but the fact of the matter is that Bernard, the restaurant chain, is definitely worth your time and money. Their traditional Georgian food ready to eat in a modern interior fitted with flatscreen TVs to follow your favorite sport events, makes these restaurants special. Their tomato, cucumber and walnut salad is the best I’ve had in Georgia so far, while their Khachapuri is no slouch either. There’s also their roasted and grilled meat platters, which are perfect compliments for knocking back a couple of cheeky pints with your mates. And, of course, there is their Khinkali. Regular readers of these pages will be aware of my borderline unhealthy obsessions with these lovely, succulent, gift-from-the-Gods meat dumplings. Just like at Pasanauri, I’ve never seen a table at Bernard without Khinkali; however, it was the first and only place in Georgia where we were told that we’d have to wait an hour and a half for Khinkali — such was the demand. That says something about their quality!

While Pasanauri remains my favorite Khinkali spot, the ones at Bernard aren’t that far off, so I’d suggest you go and check them out if you know what’s good for you. Oh, and they’re open 24hrs, too.
