GONIO FORTRESS

Built by the Romans in the first century, Gonio Fortress is the oldest in Georgia. Originally, it was referred to as either Apsaros, or Apsaruntosis. Find it just 15km south of Batumi, at the mouth of the Chorokhi River.

The grave of Saint Matthew, one of the twelve apostles, is believed to be inside the Gonio fortress, though this is rumor until the government allows digging in the area in question. However, other archaeological excavations are ongoing throughout the grounds of the fortress, focusing on Roman layers, so you'll never know what you'll come across while there!

The main attraction is the ruins of the fortress itself, but tourists enjoy the scenic views and walking around the area. There is also a small giftshop selling books and memorabilia.

Entrance: Adults: 3 GEL, Children 1 GEL
