FORMER ARCHEOLOGY MUSEUM

Perched on top of one of Tbilisi’s hills, the circular building of Georgia’s former Archaeology Museum is instantly recognizable as you head out of Tbilisi on the S1 main road. The impressive example of Soviet architecture is accessible via a dirt path from the main road. Those who venture into the depths of the now derelict building can visit the crumbling exhibition halls where shelves, tables and old displays are still visible.

Established by the Georgian archeologist and head of the Tbilisi archaeological expedition, Rostom Abramishvili, in 1988, the museum was the former home of monuments found during archeological excavations in Tbilisi. The grand entrance with a large square sculpture with ‘Archeology’ written in Georgian beneath are distant clues of the buildings past. Although now a crumbling shadow of its former-self, the museum is poignant reminder of the fate of the Soviet Union.
