Forgotten History in Unspoiled Nature
Nestled amongst the limestone cliffs of the Algeti river gorge, lies the ruins of a medieval fortress. Surrounded by impressive layers of rocks and ancient trees, the fortress once protected Georgian nobles, dukes, and princes of the Kingdom of Kartli. Today, the forgotten ruins, covering an area of one square kilometer, offer hikers the chance to step back in time. The crumbling walls, towers, and aqueduct are a short hike from Tbisi village in Georgia’s Kvemo Kartli region, 53km south-west from Tbilisi.
The fascinating nature and history of Birtvisi and its canyons is the ideal location for an adventure in any season. The area is popular for camping, hiking, climbing and canyoning. To get to Birtvisi from Tbilisi, you can take a marshrutka from Navtlugi Station to Tbisi village. From here, you can walk 3.5 km to reach the edge of the nature park. Alternatively, you can also hire a private car.
