Follow the road from Borjomi to Akhaltsikhe for 30km you’ll reach the little village of Atskuri, a paradise for those looking to escape the inrush of tourists and experience an authentic Georgian village. You can wander around the unmade roads and enjoy the unspoiled environment.
From the other side of the Mtkvari River bank, the Atksuri fortress is overlooking the town. The Fortress, built in the 10th century, was an important stronghold for the defense of Georgia, especially from attacks of the Ottomans. The way up the cliff to the fortress leads through a narrow and steep tunnel; the top offers a stunning view over the town and the surrounding mountains, making it worth the climb.
Located right at one of the entries to the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, it is also the perfect spot for hikers and nature-lovers. Plenty of panoramic trails and even a two-day circular trial (34km) can be started and ended in Atskuri.
