Most people in or around the capital will know of Vake park. It’s immense, and a real escape whilst still in the city limits. Probably slightly bias as it’s right next to my house, but still, the fact remains.
What I find surprising, though, is the lack of general knowledge of Tbilisi’s other parks.
Whilst, in the center at least, there may not be one that compares to Vake, size wise; there are one or two others that offer their own unique recluse from the bustle of Rustaveli and Pekini avenues.
Vera Park, located on Kostava street, is the perfect example of this. The entrance is pretty easy to miss, hence why the park itself is more popular with locals who have always known about it. Located directly opposite the cinema on Kostava, the entrance is somewhat to be desired. Yet, don’t let this fool you, as the park itself is a real gem. It boasts designated play-areas for kids and separate dog-walking lanes; there really is something for everyone.
Summer really comes alive in this park. Pop-up cafes line the perimeter of the area, perfect for a warm July evening cocktail, or perhaps a coffee whilst watching the kids play, or why not try a game of checkers with the locals?
My personal favorite, though, is the viewing opportunity at the far end of the park, which overlooks the beautiful city of Tbilisi. As aforementioned, few people know about this space, which is what makes it so special. You feel as if you are seeing Tbilisi, its people, families and daily life, as a local yourself. Not a tourist or foreigner. Try to get there at sunset and sit on one of the benches overlooking the city. It truly is magnificent!
