An exhibition of the works of famous Hungarian painter and illustrator of Shota Rustaveli’s epic poem 'Knight in the Panther's Skin' are being showcased at the Art Palace museum in Tbilisi (6 Kargareteli Str.).
Six of the artist’s originals and 27 high resolution copies of his works are on display, brought for the first time to Tbilisi from the National Gallery of Hungary in Budapest especially for the exhibition at Art Palace.
The exhibition is dedicated to the celebration of the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Hungary and organized within days of Hungarian Culture in Tbilisi.
Zichy came to Georgia in 1881 and instead of the initially planned seven, made 34 illustrations for Shota Rustaveli’s poem, which he then gifted to the Georgian people for free.
Mihaly Zichy was born in 1827 in Hungary, and, after graduating from university, studied at the Academy of Arts in Vienna. In 1847, Zichy was invited to Russia and became an artist of Russia’s royal court, painting portraits of four of Russia’s last emperors.
The exhibition at the Art Palace will last until December 15, but the artist’s originals will be displayed only until December 6.
Tickets cost GEL 2 for adults and GEL 1 for under 16s.
The Mihaly Zichy exhibition is organized with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia, the Embassy of Hungary in Tbilisi and the National Gallery of Budapest.
