As the mountains surrounding Mestia become more and more famous every year as a good ski holiday spot, they still have their share of magic to offer in summer, when the snow has left.
The mountain of Ushba, with its elevation of 4,710m, is known as the Matterhorn of the Caucasus. This name is due to the mountain’s spire-shaped double summit that makes it immediately noticeable from afar.
Inhabitants of Svaneti carry a romantic legend about this mountain, and the other most prominent summit of the region called Tetnuldi. They say the two mounts were once a beloved couple that was separated and turned into mountains to look at each other for all time. If one of the lovers is sad, both peaks are covered with fog.
When Ushba mountain isn’t sad, and thus covered with fog, it offers an unforgettable hike for nature lovers.
Starting from the town of Mestia, you have several ways to reach the spot just under the double summit of Ushba. The fastest (and laziest) but most expensive option is to rent a car that will take you there in half an hour, whereas you can enjoy the landscape for four hours if you bravely decide to hike.
On your way to the top, you can enjoy the various plants forming the mountain’s flora. You will probably meet tourists going up and down the hill riding horses, as this option is also available in Mestia.
Once you finally get to the end of the rocky path, you’ll find yourself surrounded by the Caucasus’ peaks as you look all around you. Small natural lakes created by the melting of the glaciers reflect the sky, and wild horses can be observed grazing nearby.
If you stay until evening, it is the perfect occasion to relax and take magnificent pictures of the sunset disappearing behind the peaks of Tetnuldi, Ushba’s long lost love.
