In an article published on the Dailymail’s website this weekend, Tbilisi is described as “terrific for a long weekend on the edge of Europe.”
This is one of many articles from respected foreign sites to be written in recent months.
Their reasons for visiting Georgia include:
· Once a Soviet republic, Georgia is an increasingly popular call for a mini-break
· The capital Tblisi is around four-and-a-half hours' flying time from London
· Highlights include Old Tblisi, which swells out on the banks of the River Kura
The piece mentions that the name of the city means ‘warm’ and that this originated from the Sulphur springs.
“The name means 'warm', referring to the hot springs which feed the city's sulphur baths. Its strategic location at the crossroads of Asia and Europe has seen invasions by Mongols, Khazars, Turks and Arabs over the centuries. But these days peace reigns and Tbilisi is an extremely affordable and fascinating city break.”
A number of attractions are recommended around the city, including Old Tbilisi, the cable car and the botanical garden.
