All great journeys begin with a first step, and spring is the best time for it. There are places to discover and quickly; places that bring you face-to-face with novelty and new emotions; places that grab those emotions and amplify them. Racha. Next time you pick up your backpack and decide to head out on the road, keep in mind that Racha is one of those places: somewhere ready to fill you with newly discovered emotions and impress.
Escape the noise and stress of the daily grind: from Tbilisi, head west along the central highway turn right after Terjola and let the road lead you to this place, to Racha; a place full to the brim with stories and legends. Right after you enter Racha, your first delight of a surprise will be the sight of Shaori against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains Then there's Nikortsminda, Udabno, Sayinule, the place where Shareula was born, and there you’ll find yourself enveloped in the magic that is Racha.
The Qvabtkari Waterfall flows in a heart shape, which is why people call it The Waterfall of Love. Everyone’s heard the tale that you can find your future partner here, but it is just a legend in the end. Then Barakoni, and close to it Minda Tsikhe, then the high mountains and Mravaldzari, the highest point of Racha, the place of bare-back horse riding and old men with white beards.
The adventures never end, and even though the fresh mineral water you drink satiates you, you’ll still have the Rachan cuisine to explore.
If you haven’t tasted Racha’s Lobiani, then you know nothing of Lobiani, especially when paired with ham. Learn the story of how Ham and Lobiani became friends and how their path led them to Racha’s Alexandroul-Mujuretulian Khvanchkara wine. The perfect combination and love of these three exceeds every taste in the world.
These genuine flavors are found in families throughout Racha; in the small, cute hotels; and, of course, in every Rachan kitchen. Racha does not boast many restaurants, but we recommend you try Gharistskali, Tavern Krikhula and Restaurant Racha in Ambrolauri. And then there’s Restaurant Shareula, one of the most unique in atmosphere and a must-try during your stay in Racha.
If you chose a hotel over camping, you’ll be sure to find something to suit your budget. In or around Ambrolauri, pick a guesthouse like Tsibena or Garemo, the latter being very close to the airport and guaranteed to meet your every need and perhaps even take your breath away. Imagine: a wooden house with a huge garden and vineyard, colorful blue windows, fireplace and peace, with only the background rumblings of the Rioni River to disturb you. Breathe in the sun and earth from the Garemo balcony; breathe in spring.
High mountainous Racha is the most remarkable area of the region. Ghebi, Shkmeri, Shovi, Gona, Zofkhito. Healing waters, hospitable people, astonishing nature, pine trees. Until you see it with your own eyes, you’ll never be able to imagine it.
Those who have experienced the mountains of Switzerland or have heard about them can discover a second Switzerland here in Racha: a real land of wonders. Become Racha's Alice and discover your own Wonderland, the memories of which you will treasure your entire lifetime.
