EXPLORING GEORGIA'S REGIONS

Mariam Kvrivishvili, Head of the Georgian National Tourism Administration, gives us a quick tour of the best of Georgia.

TUSHETI

Georgians and guests equally admire this hidden gem of stunning landscapes combined with valuable rich cultural heritage and the hospitality of local people.

Another highlight of the journey is the tricky road you have to pass to get there, a definite adrenaline rush! I’m always happy to meet people that have yet to discover the magic of Tusheti.

If you long to breathe fresh air, drink water from crystal clear springs, and discover small colorful lakes hidden in deep forests or alpine meadows, you must head to Racha, one of the most untouched regions in the country. No visit to this region is complete without tasting some of the local delicacies, smoked ham (lori), accompanied by the exclusive wine of Khvanchkara.

SVANETI

By Tony Hanmer

Whether driving or flying to this region, your journey will be just as pleasant and can be compared to time travel as you arrive in a world of medieval towers, where catching gold
flowing down-river using sheep wool is still practiced by the locals. Dramatic nature, the UNESCO world heritage site of Ushguli – one of the highest settlements in Europe, the
Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography, local cuisine: these are just some of the highlights that make the region exclusive not only in the country, but in the world.

SAMTSKHE-JAVAKHETI

A kingdom of lakes: this is a region that greets you with a new color every time you go back. A visit to Poka Monastery will introduce you to a world of authenticity, amazing you with the sophisticated handicrafts and souvenirs created by the local nuns. The “Turquoise village” of Gorelovka will wow you with its colors, leaving you with the desire to come back for
more. It can be easily said that this region has the widest range of architectural monuments, from cyclopean sites to cultural heritage of the 19th century.

KHEVSURETI

Once you get to the Datvijvari Pass and climb to the viewpoint, you’ll get the feeling that you are about to discover something new and extraordinary. And just half-an-hour’s drive from this place takes you to a fairytale setting: Shatili, a unique Medieval complex of early modern fortresses and fortified dwellings. Take your own tent and set it up along the banks of the River Arghuni, or choose to overnight in one of the fortresses designed as a guest house. Be sure not to miss a visit to another Khevsureti landmark, the Mutso fortress.
