Woland’s Speakeasy

The city of Tbilisi is famous for many places, but we at Where.ge like to pick out the most remarkable ones to guarantee your experience in Georgia is unforgettable and unique.

If you’re looking for something exceptionally mysterious in Tbilisi, then we invite you to one of the classiest you can find: the first Georgian Speakeasy. Woland’s Speakeasy, with its distinct 1920s Prohibition vibe, is tucked away at 2 Ivane Machabeli Street, in a brick cellar hidden behind a bookcase in a book-cafe. Follow the steps down into the magical renovated basement for a nocturnal activity alternative of style, signature cocktails, live piano music and cigars.

The interior of the Speakeasy is divided into separate chambers: one for cigar smoking, one a lounge area, another exclusive for beer evenings and the cozy cocktail chamber with a bar; all with red-bricks, low, ambient lighting and soft background music. Each time you visit Woland’s, you’ll see new elements from the book ‘Master and Margarita’. Nothing is accidental: even the names of the cocktail are inspired by characters from the book. Another reason this place is a must-go is the mixology. Lead bartender, the world-renowned Kirill Ledashchev, trained the staff members meticulously. As a guest, the focus is on you, with staff aiming to please and make your experience exceptional, with cordial, professional service.

Escape reality and travel back to a time when people sat and chatted in a classy ambiance, sipping Manhattans. There is a certain coolness about the Great War generation and how they showed themselves to society. These days, the world moves fast, and quality is low. Let Woland’s be the exception as you enjoy the moment along with high quality service: the cosmopolitan link that was missing in Tbilisi, a growing city which can now count itself among other greats with Speakeasies, like Moscow, Kyiv and London. This is a sign that Tbilisi is ready to come of age at last.

The Concept of Woland’s Speakeasy

Master and Margarita was written in the same era that prohibition rule featured heavily in the US, and the book itself suits the magic that makes Woland’s Speakeasy stand out from traditional venues. Your journey begins at Begemot café, an elegant choice for literature, tea and coffee lovers. An international book swap event is held there twice a month.
