SKHALTA CATHEDRAL

Perched among the green hills in the Khulo municipality of Adjara, the cream bricks and deep gray turrets of once strategically linked Adjara with Artani in the Middle Ages. The cathedral is steeped in history. Legend dictates that Queen Tamar ordered the construction of the church during the “Golden Age” of medieval Georgia whilst the Skhalta Valley belonged to the noble family of Abuserisdze.

The church was abandoned after the Ottomon conquest of the region in the 16th century, and was not discovered again until 1874. It was renovated in the early 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Today, visitors can explore the large hall church and its seven-facated apse. Small fragments of the original frescoes, dating back to the 14th or 15th century, are still visible. The church, which lies between Batumi and Borjomi, is worth a visit for those searching for history off-the-beaten track.
