BODBE NUNNERY

Nestled among Cypress trees on a steep hillside overlooking the Alazani valley, the ancient Nunnery of St. Nino at Bodbe makes for an interesting visit during a trip in the Kakheti region of Georgia.

The original monastery was built in the 9th century but it has since been remodelled and is currently undergoing further renovations. On a clear day, it is possible to see the Caucasus mountains from the site.

The site still functions as a nunnery and is a major pilgrimage destination in Georgia due to its links with St. Nino, the 4th century female evangelist of Georgians. Her grave is located in a small church in an aisled basilica at the monastery. She is believed to have died in the area around 338 – 340 AD. During soviet times, the government closed the nunnery and converted it into a hospital.
