SAKE

The global Sushi trend is as hot in Tbilisi as in Europe, with a handful of bamboo-designed Maki and Sushi restaurants to be found in the Georgian capital. Apart from at the shores of the Black Sea, raw fish is a rather unheard of ingredient in traditional Georgian cuisine, but due to travel blogs and increased mobility of the young, many long for Sushi restaurants.

Run by two young food revolutionaries, Sake Sushi Bar is nestled in a little alley next to Rustaveli Avenue, the main traffic artery of old Tbilisi. Getting there is easy, and over 5000 ratings on Facebook underscore the popularity of the place. A couple of Bamboo branches decorate the entrance, creating a corridor between the doorstep and the sidewalk specifically designed for a far-east feeling in the middle of the Caucasus.

The first thing that catches your eye is the Japanese interior design. Individual bamboo doilies go perfectly with small-sized furniture in dark colors. The staff is welcoming and escorts visitors to their table. Space is very limited, so if you plan to dine on busy days, booking is recommended. There are two closed-off sections for private dining arrangements. One of them is reserved for bigger groups of 4-6 people, while a smaller one serves for a romantic candle-light evening with your better half.

Despite the importance of a nice environment to savor foreign cuisine, the food transforms a dinner at Sake Sushi Bar into a real experience. Prices are on the same scale as in Western European countries, but the taste exceeds many wannabe-Sushi restaurants in France or the UK. When eating the different types of Maki, one feels the love with which the rolls were prepared.

KYOTO

Japanese cuisine is a favorite for many, even in Gergia, the land of cheese, meat and wine! If you get a craving for it while visiting Tbilisi, we recommened the centrally located Kyoto.

Offering a pleasant and eastern-refined atmosphere, this is sushi paradise. Aside from the classic Japanese foods which are already familiar to you (sushi, noodles and bento boxes), here you can taste the original creations of one of the best chefs in Tbilisi, Giorgi Chinchrashvili. Adjusting to the Georgian taste, masterpieces of culinary fusion regularly surprise local and Japanese guests alike.

MOCHI

Mochi is a cute, modern cafe on Paliashvili St. in the hip Vake neighborhood serving up modern Asian cuisine. There are a few tables inside and a counter to slurp down a bowl of noodles, but Mochi’s main business is takeout and delivery.

Mochi specializes in sushi, and has a large variety on offer, along with soups, rice, and noodle dishes. The prices are what you would expect from a trendy sushi restaurant in Tbilisi’s trendiest neighborhood, but not much higher than other sushi places in the city.

The quality is usually very good, and the service is speedy, even for delivery.

UMAMI TBILISI - ASIAN FUSION RESTAURANT

A part of Radisson Blu hotel, the Asian fusion restaurant Umami is indisputably the strongest player in the city in the field of South-Asian food, and maybe the most perfect place in Tbilisi to eat sushi. From the quality of products to the way of serving them, from the table set-up to the sincerity of the waiters’ smiles, it sets a very high level. The view from the window is a pleasant bonus.

The chef is from the Philippines, and he knows the whole South-Asian region very well. Our top picks are crab tempura, red curry with prawns and chilli pork ramen, while it’s simply impossible to name the best rolls. Even the unbeatable classics such as California will open up a bouquet of taste on your palates.
