SEE, SEA FOOD IN TBILISI!

While seafood is quite low on the list of Georgian specialties, with river fish far more commonly seen, the country does front the Black Sea and so has a portion of fishy income from it. That said, if you’re in the capital and want something from oceans beyond, be prepared to pay high prices! Sushi has been booming in recent years, too, and there are now numerous sushi bars and takeaways dotting the city. If you’re in the mood for seafood, check out what Tbilisi has to offer below.

ANDROPOV'S EARS

Head up in the lift of the glass-enveloped Republic building to discover an incredible fine-dining experience in the sky overlooking the capital city. The menu of the Andropov’s Ears Seafood Restaurant is truly special, with an extravagant choice of fresh fish ranging from luxe king crabs, fresh oysters, lobster, red prawns and the finest aged prime beef for the biggest beef connoisseurs. Created by Gilles& Boissier, a French Interior Design Company, the restaurant’s design is a mix of cosmopolitan flair and local elements. In high summer the terrace plays host to a spectacular buzz. The bar, with its panoramic views over the city, serves the best classic cocktails and comprehensive collection of Tsinandali Estate wine.

MOCHI

Mochi is a cute, modern cafe in the hip Vake neighborhood serving up modern Asian cuisine. There are a few tables inside and a counter to sit at and slurp down a bowl of noodles, but Mochi’s main business is takeout and delivery. Mochi specializes in sushi, and has a large variety on offer, along with soups, rice, and noodle dishes. The prices are what you would expect from a trendy sushi restaurant in Tbilisi’s trendiest neighborhood, but not much higher than other sushi places in the city. The quality is usually very good, and the
service is speedy, even for delivery.

In Batumi? Try GOLD FISH

Traveling to the seaside and not eating fish is almost a crime. One of the best places to do that is located on the highway on the way to Batumi. A simple interior – red and white brick walls, minimalistic furniture, huge windows – greet you, and the view over the Black Sea and iconic Batumi skyline is fantastic. Even more fantastic is the freshly prepared fish. If the catch was good, you’ll get a full plate of mullet or anchovy for a laughable price. The local seafood dish is indescribably big and tastes unbelievably good: the best dish to share with your friends over a draft beer or house wine. Big celebrations and group dinners are also common here. Who doesn’t want to enjoy fresh fish and see the sun drowning in the sea and coloring the horizon in red and purple?
